Minister Plenipotentiary Drs. Gracita R. Arrindell attended the closing session of the first edition of the Postgraduate Kingdom Affairs Programme at The Hague University of Applied Sciences on Friday, 24 April. The gathering brought together participants, lecturers, and policymakers to reflect on intensive exchange, learning, and collaboration across the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Shared perspectives across the Kingdom
The programme brought together a diverse group of 40 participants, equally representing European Netherlands and the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, including Bonaire, Saba, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, Curaçao, and Aruba. Throughout the course, participants engaged deeply with themes such as governance, equality, education, and decision-making processes within the Kingdom framework.

Speakers during the closing session, including Marcel Daniels, Wouter Veenendaal, State Secretary Eric van der Burg, and Minister Plenipotentiary Mildred Schwengle, emphasized a shared sense of pride in what the programme has achieved. A recurring theme throughout the afternoon was the importance of understanding each other’s perspectives. Participants and speakers highlighted that meaningful cooperation within the Kingdom begins with listening, learning, and acknowledging differences, while working toward common goals.

Unity in diversity
In her remarks, Minister Schwengle underscored the importance of mutual understanding and shared responsibility, describing the programme as a vital step toward strengthening Kingdom relations. She referred to the guiding principle of “unity in diversity,” noting that collaboration requires both openness and commitment from all partners. State Secretary Van der Burg echoed this sentiment, stressing that despite the differences between the countries and territories within the Kingdom, it is essential to operate collectively, particularly in light of current global developments, which call for closer cooperation and alignment.

From dialogue to action
A key component of the closing session was the interactive poster market, where participants presented their final projects. Topics ranged from enhancing cooperation and promoting equality, to improving access to education and strengthening participatory decision-making across the Kingdom. These presentations reflected not only the depth of knowledge gained during the programme, but also a shared ambition to translate dialogue into tangible outcomes that benefit all parts of the Kingdom.

Continued engagement for Sint Maarten
For Sint Maarten, Minister Arrindell’s attendance reaffirmed the importance of active engagement in initiatives that foster mutual understanding and strengthen institutional ties. Reflecting on the programme, she emphasized that the collaboration from the outset has been mutually enriching.

“Our enthusiastic collaboration and support from the outset, from the three Ministers Plenipotentiary, has truly been a two-way street. We shared practical, on-the-ground experiences with the university and its participants, while students in turn translated their assignments into tangible and thought-provoking results,” Minister Arrindell stated. She also expressed her appreciation for the leadership behind the initiative, commending Marcel Daniels and Professor Wouter Veenendaal for their vision and dedication in bringing the programme to life. The closing session, she noted, clearly reflected the impact of their efforts, as participants proudly received their certificates.

Looking ahead, Minister Arrindell welcomed the continuation of the programme, including plans to introduce an English-language track, which will further expand its reach and impact across the Kingdom.
